Venezuelan Security Guard Pulled Alive From Building Basement Eight Days After Twin Quakes

In a remarkable rescue that has brought hope to a nation devastated by disaster, emergency workers have pulled a Venezuelan security guard alive from the basement of a collapsed building eight days after powerful twin earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, killing more than 2,200 people and leaving thousands missing.

The survivor, Hernán Alberto Gil Flores, a 43-year-old night security guard, was rescued early Thursday from the ruins of the Galerías Playa Grande shopping center in the coastal city of Catia La Mar, in La Guaira state. Gil had been trapped beneath the rubble since June 24, when two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude struck within minutes of each other, causing catastrophic destruction across the region.

According to rescue officials, Gil survived because the small security booth where he was working remained largely intact as the surrounding structure collapsed, creating a pocket of air that protected him from being crushed. Rescue teams first established contact with him several days after the disaster using specialized cameras and communication equipment. They were able to deliver water, food and other essentials through a narrow opening while engineers worked to stabilize the dangerously unstable building.

The rescue operation lasted roughly 70 hours and involved teams from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, the United States, Portugal, Mexico, El Salvador and several other countries. Specialists carefully dug two access tunnels through tons of unstable concrete, working around the clock while monitoring the risk of additional collapses and aftershocks. Costa Rican Red Cross rescuer Minyar Collado said Gil remained remarkably composed despite his ordeal. Rescuers revealed that one of his first requests after contact was made was that his wife should not be told he was alive until they were certain he could be safely rescued, fearing she would suffer another heartbreak if the operation failed. His wife later described learning that he had survived as “a ray of light in the darkness” after days of uncertainty.

Gil’s rescue has become a powerful symbol of hope as Venezuela continues to grapple with one of the deadliest natural disasters in its modern history. Authorities say the earthquakes have killed at least 2,295 people, injured more than 11,000, displaced thousands of families and damaged or destroyed nearly 59,000 buildings. Tens of thousands of people are still reported missing, although officials caution that many may have relocated without being accounted for.

Despite the successful rescue, humanitarian conditions remain dire. Thousands of survivors are living in temporary shelters with limited access to clean water, food and medical care, while international aid agencies continue to warn of growing risks of disease outbreaks and worsening shortages of essential supplies. Search-and-rescue teams are gradually shifting their focus from locating survivors to recovery operations as hopes of finding more people alive diminish with each passing day.
