Wisconsin Tornado Causes Extensive Damage and Leaves Thousands Without Power

A powerful tornado tore through northeastern Wisconsin on Monday, leaving a trail of destruction across several communities, ripping roofs from homes, overturning vehicles and cutting electricity to more than 30,000 customers. Emergency officials launched search-and-rescue operations as they assessed the full extent of the damage, though there were no immediate reports of fatalities.

The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that the tornado touched down in Winnebago County, approximately 145 kilometres northwest of Milwaukee, after a volatile weather system fuelled by extreme heat and humidity swept across the Great Lakes region. The twister caused severe damage in Menasha, Appleton, Fox Crossing and neighbouring communities.

Authorities described scenes of widespread devastation. Homes had roofs torn away, mature trees were uprooted, utility poles snapped, vehicles flipped over and debris scattered across roads, forcing emergency crews to close several major routes. Police in Appleton reported extensive traffic disruptions after traffic lights failed because of the widespread power outage.

In Menasha, city officials said virtually the entire community of about 18,000 residents lost electricity after the storm struck around midday. Emergency shelters were opened for displaced residents while utility companies worked to restore power. Officials warned residents to avoid damaged neighbourhoods because of downed power lines, gas leaks and unstable buildings.

Winnebago County Executive Gordon Hintz said emergency responders were conducting door-to-door searches in the hardest-hit areas to ensure no residents were trapped inside damaged buildings. While no deaths or serious injuries had been confirmed by Monday evening, officials stressed that the assessment remained ongoing and urged caution as rescue teams continued their work.

Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson described the tornado as a “devastating system” that caused “extensive and severe damage,” particularly in Menasha and Fox Crossing. Local authorities said some neighbourhoods were initially inaccessible because fallen trees, utility poles and debris completely blocked roads.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said state agencies were working closely with local emergency services to support recovery efforts. Utility crews, firefighters and public works teams were deployed across the affected region to restore electricity, clear roads and inspect damaged infrastructure. Officials warned that recovery could take several days in the hardest-hit communities.

Meteorologists said the tornado developed from a fast-moving storm system that tracked across the Upper Midwest before weakening as it moved toward Illinois. Forecasters warned that while the immediate threat had diminished, residents should remain alert for additional severe weather as unstable atmospheric conditions persist across parts of the region.
