Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry has been elected the new President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), marking a series of historic firsts.

The two-time Olympic swimming champion is the first woman and the first African to hold the prestigious position.

At 41 years old, she is also the youngest person ever to lead the IOC. Coventry, who currently serves as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, brings a unique perspective to the role, combining her experience as an elite athlete with her political leadership.

Her election signals a significant moment for both gender equality and African representation within the Olympic movement.
