2027: Tinubu Orders Political Appointees to Step Down by March 31
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign from their posts on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive is seen as part of efforts to ensure compliance with electoral laws and promote fairness in the political process ahead of the next election cycle.
According to sources within the administration, the order affects ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants, and other government officials holding political appointments who have declared or are planning to declare their ambition for elective offices.
The move aligns with provisions of Nigeria’s electoral framework, which requires public office holders to step down before participating in party primaries or election processes.
Political analysts say the decision could trigger a wave of resignations in the coming days, as several appointees are reportedly positioning themselves for governorship, National Assembly, and other key political contests in 2027.
The presidency has yet to release a detailed list of affected officials, but insiders suggest that compliance will be closely monitored to avoid conflicts of interest and ensure a level playing field.
