Prominent Delta lawyer and political commentator, Kingsley Akpederin, has declared that the governorship ambition of Chris Iyovwaye will dramatically alter the political landscape in Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections, predicting that the candidate will surprise both the ruling APC and the state’s political establishment.

Akpederin made the assertion on Monday while speaking with journalists in Asaba, where he threw his weight behind Iyovwaye’s governorship bid under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). He described the candidate as a transformative figure capable of mobilising youths, women and voters seeking an alternative to the current political order.

According to him, many political observers are underestimating Iyovwaye’s popularity and grassroots appeal in the same way they initially dismissed the political movement that rallied behind Peter Obi during the 2023 general elections.

Akpederin argued that Iyovwaye represents a departure from the traditional style of governance in Delta State and possesses the vision to revive industries, create jobs, improve electricity supply and strengthen security through innovative community-based initiatives.

He further claimed that growing dissatisfaction among residents over poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment despite the state’s substantial revenues could create an opening for a political upset in 2027. He maintained that many Deltans are eager for a new leadership direction and would rally behind a credible alternative candidate.

The lawyer also criticised what he described as the dominance of political godfathers and entrenched interests in the state’s governance structure, insisting that Iyovwaye’s candidacy offers an opportunity for ordinary citizens to reclaim greater influence over public affairs.

He expressed confidence that the NDC candidate would emerge as a major force in the coming election, especially with support from political stakeholders, youth groups and members of the broader reform movement seeking change in Delta State.

The comments come amid increasing political activity in Delta State, where the APC remains the dominant ruling party but continues to contend with internal disputes and realignments ahead of the 2027 polls. Analysts say the emergence of new opposition figures and platforms could make the governorship contest one of the most closely watched races in the country.

While the APC has repeatedly expressed confidence in its electoral prospects, opposition groups insist that voter dissatisfaction and shifting political alliances could reshape the state’s political future as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
