Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed reports suggesting it will grant automatic tickets to sitting lawmakers ahead of upcoming elections, as internal tensions continue to escalate across party ranks.

The party’s leadership, through its National Working Committee (NWC), clarified that no such policy exists, stressing that all aspirants, regardless of incumbency, must go through the party’s established primary election process.

The clarification comes amid growing speculation that some federal and state lawmakers would be handed automatic return tickets without contest. However, party officials insist the APC remains committed to internal democracy.

According to senior party figures, granting automatic tickets would undermine fairness and disenfranchise other loyal members seeking to contest for positions.

The development is unfolding against the backdrop of deepening internal divisions within the party. Reports indicate that disagreements over candidate selection, zoning arrangements, and leadership control have intensified in several states.

In some regions, aggrieved party members have openly threatened to defect if what they describe as “imposition of candidates” persists.

Political analysts warn that the situation could weaken party cohesion ahead of future electoral cycles, particularly if reconciliation efforts fail.

Sources within the party suggest that factions in key states, including Rivers, Kano, and Kaduna; are already mobilising support bases in anticipation of possible defections.

While no mass defection has been officially confirmed, insiders say consultations are ongoing among dissatisfied members, some of whom are reportedly in talks with opposition parties.

The APC, which has maintained dominance at the federal level since 2015, now faces a delicate balancing act: preserving party unity while ensuring a transparent and competitive candidate selection process.

Observers note that how the party manages its internal crisis in the coming months could significantly influence its political strength and public perception.

For now, the leadership’s rejection of automatic tickets appears aimed at calming tensions, but whether it will be enough to prevent a wave of defections remains uncertain.
