Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has demanded a full explanation following the deaths of the U.S. and Mexican officials after a security-related operation in the northern state of Chihuahua.

The incident involved a fatal car crash that killed four officials, two linked to the United States and two Mexican investigators, after an operation targeting clandestine drug laboratories in a rural part of the state.

According to preliminary reports, the officials were travelling in a convoy when their vehicle veered off a mountainous road, plunged into a ravine, and exploded, killing all occupants.

President Sheinbaum said her administration had not been informed about the involvement or presence of the U.S. personnel in the operation, raising concerns over a possible violation of Mexico’s national security laws. She emphasized that any cooperation with foreign governments in security matters must receive federal approval under the country’s constitution.

Confusion has surrounded the exact role of the U.S. officials. While early reports suggested they were connected to the anti-drug operation, local authorities later clarified that they were not directly involved in the raid itself. Instead, they had reportedly been conducting drone training and joined the convoy afterward.

The operation itself led to the discovery and dismantling of a large illegal drug lab, though no suspects were found at the site, likely having fled before security forces arrived.

The tragedy has reignited debate over the extent of U.S. involvement in Mexico’s fight against drug cartels; a politically sensitive issue. Sheinbaum reiterated that while intelligence sharing is allowed, Mexico does not permit foreign military or law enforcement operations on its soil without explicit authorization.
