The Director General, Media and Publicity, Kano Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, has alleged that Abba Kabir Yusuf approached President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Dawakin Tofa claimed the proposed political move allegedly had the backing of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as well as former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

According to him, the alleged discussions are part of wider political calculations and behind-the-scenes negotiations already shaping alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

He further claimed that Governor Yusuf considered honouring an invitation by President Tinubu to join the APC as a way of addressing what he described as a political miscalculation involving Kwankwaso’s alleged alignment with a “pro-Biafra team.”

Dawakin Tofa also alleged that Kwankwaso may be indirectly working toward President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 through strategic political actions and alignments.

He, however, noted that such claims remain part of ongoing political discussions and narratives emerging within the country’s evolving political space.

Commenting on opposition politics, the Kano government spokesman argued that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may struggle to gain political acceptance in Kano State due to what he described as the conservative nature of the state’s political environment.

According to him, political acceptance in Kano is often influenced by ideological and regional considerations that shape voter behaviour.

He also alleged that political actors opposed to a Yoruba presidency are holding consultations and strategic meetings between cities such as Abeokuta and Ibadan as part of broader political manoeuvres ahead of 2027.

Dawakin Tofa described Kwankwaso as a “confused politician” who allegedly abandoned his ideology for personal political interests, adding that recent political developments have thrown opposition forces into disarray in a manner that could ultimately benefit President Tinubu.

On claims that about five million supporters attended a political gathering at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano, the spokesman dismissed the figures as exaggerated.

He argued that the numbers were unrealistic when compared with the capacity of major public venues in the state, including the Sani Abacha Stadium, which he said holds about 16,000 people.

According to him, Kwankwaso’s residence could not practically accommodate more than 2,000 persons.

Dawakin Tofa further stated that individuals associated with Biafra advocacy may face challenges gaining mainstream political acceptance in Kano due to the state’s conservative political culture.

He also claimed that Kwankwaso and Peter Obi hold divergent political ideologies and personal political differences that could make any future alliance difficult.

According to him, people with opposing political philosophies may struggle to effectively govern a complex country like Nigeria under a joint political arrangement.
