Egypt recorded the first FIFA World Cup victory in their history on Sunday night, coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in a crucial Group G encounter, with captain Mohamed Salah delivering a man-of-the-match performance.

The Pharaohs found themselves trailing at halftime after New Zealand defender Finn Surman headed home from a corner to give the Oceania side a deserved lead. Egypt, however, emerged transformed after the break and mounted a spirited comeback.

Mostafa Zico equalized shortly before the hour mark, heading in a cross from Mohamed Hany to spark Egypt’s revival. Just nine minutes later, Salah produced a moment of quality, combining with Zico before calmly finishing to put Egypt ahead for the first time in the match.

The Liverpool legend was not finished. In the 82nd minute, Salah provided the assist for Mahmoud Trezeguet, whose diving header sealed a memorable 3-1 victory and sent Egyptian supporters into celebration.

The result marks Egypt’s first-ever win at a FIFA World Cup, ending a wait stretching back 92 years since their tournament debut in 1934. The victory also lifts Egypt to the top of Group G with four points after opening their campaign with a draw against Belgium.

Salah’s goal and assist earned him the Man of the Match award, further cementing his status as Egypt’s greatest football icon. The 34-year-old’s leadership and attacking brilliance proved decisive as Egypt boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

With Belgium and Iran playing out a goalless draw elsewhere in the group, Egypt now controls its own destiny heading into its final group-stage clash against Iran. A positive result in that match could secure a historic place in the Round of 32.
