Brazil Recalls Ambassador After Argentina’s President Milei Insults Government Officials

Brazil has recalled its ambassador to Argentina in a sharp diplomatic protest after Argentine President Javier Milei made a series of inflammatory remarks targeting Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian government and members of the country’s judiciary during a political event in São Paulo. The move marks one of the most serious diplomatic confrontations between South America’s two largest economies since Milei took office.

The decision was announced by Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday after Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira consulted with President Lula. Ambassador Julio Bitelli was recalled from Buenos Aires “for consultations,” a diplomatic step generally reserved for periods of significant tension between countries. Brazilian officials described Milei’s comments as a “direct affront” to the country’s institutions and leadership.

The diplomatic row erupted after Milei travelled to Brazil to attend a political convention that formally endorsed Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, as his party’s presidential candidate. During his speech, Milei referred to Lula as a “convict” and a “thief,” labelled Brazil’s government “thieving socialists,” and urged voters to back Bolsonaro’s campaign as the way to “stop Lula.” He also criticised Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court, directing insults at Justice Alexandre de Moraes after the judge denied Milei permission to visit Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a prison sentence under house arrest following his conviction over an attempted coup.

Brazilian authorities reacted swiftly. The president of the Supreme Federal Court, Edson Fachin, condemned Milei’s remarks as disrespectful attacks on Brazil’s democratic institutions made while on Brazilian soil. Officials stressed that while Brazil respects freedom of political expression, public insults directed at the country’s head of state and judiciary by a visiting foreign leader crossed a diplomatic line.

The latest dispute further strains an already frosty relationship between Lula and Milei. Since becoming Argentina’s president, Milei has openly criticised Lula’s left-wing government, while Lula has shown little interest in engaging with his Argentine counterpart. The two leaders have yet to hold a formal bilateral meeting despite sharing membership in regional organisations and being presidents of neighbouring countries with extensive trade ties.

Political figures in Argentina also criticised Milei’s comments. Former President Alberto Fernández and Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof argued that the president’s rhetoric does not reflect the views of many Argentines and warned that such statements risk damaging relations with Brazil, Argentina’s largest trading partner. Economists noted that despite political tensions, both countries remain heavily dependent on each other through trade, particularly in the automotive, agriculture and energy sectors.

Although recalling an ambassador does not amount to breaking diplomatic relations, analysts describe the move as a powerful signal of Brazil’s dissatisfaction. The consultation period allows the government to review its diplomatic approach and determine whether additional measures may be necessary if relations continue to deteriorate.

The incident comes during an already heated election season in Brazil, where Lula is seeking re-election and Flávio Bolsonaro has emerged as the leading conservative challenger. Milei’s decision to campaign alongside Bolsonaro has added another layer of political sensitivity to an already strained bilateral relationship, raising questions about future cooperation between the two South American powers.
