FAAN Says No Fire Occurred at Murtala Muhammed International Airport Terminal 2

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, contrary to initial reports that sparked concern among passengers and the public.

In a press statement issued on August 2, 2026, FAAN said preliminary investigations revealed that the smoke seen inside the terminal was not caused by a fire but resulted from the activation of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system.

The authority explained that while the reason behind the unexpected discharge of the fire suppression system is still under investigation, there is currently no evidence of any fire incident at the terminal.

“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” the statement read.

FAAN also assured passengers and stakeholders that normal operations have resumed at Terminal 2 following the incident. Airport activities, including passenger processing and flight operations, are continuing as scheduled while technical experts work to determine what triggered the system.

The authority noted that a comprehensive investigation is underway to establish the exact cause of the incident and to prevent a recurrence.

The clarification comes after widespread reports and videos circulated on social media suggesting that a fire had broken out at the Lagos airport, leading to public anxiety and speculation.

FAAN expressed appreciation to passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the incident. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and security across Nigeria’s airports.

Airport authorities are expected to provide additional updates once the ongoing investigation into the activation of the FM-200 fire suppression system has been concluded.
