Two Experienced Skydivers Die In Midair Collision As Parachutes Become Entangled
Two experienced skydivers have died following a midair collision during an organised skydiving event in California, United States, after their parachutes became entangled shortly before landing.
The fatal incident occurred on Friday at Skydive Elsinore, involving two licensed skydivers who were participating in the organised activity.
According to a statement by Skydive Elsinore, the skydivers completed the free-fall stage of their jumps successfully, and their parachutes opened normally.
However, tragedy struck as they approached the landing area, when the two collided approximately 150 feet (46 metres) above the ground.
The impact reportedly caused their parachutes to become entangled, leaving both unable to land safely.
The company said both skydivers sustained critical injuries when they hit the ground.
The Riverside County Fire Department confirmed that emergency responders attended the scene and transported the two victims to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
They were subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.
Skydive Elsinore described the incident as a tragic occurrence, noting that both individuals were experienced and licensed skydivers.
The accident has raised renewed concerns about the risks associated with skydiving, an adventure sport that involves jumping from aircraft at considerable heights and relying on parachutes for a safe descent.
Although modern equipment, professional training and established safety procedures have helped improve safety in the sport, midair collisions and parachute malfunctions remain among the potential dangers participants face.
The circumstances surrounding Friday’s collision were not further detailed in the company’s statement.
