AFCON 2027 Qualifier: Nigeria 2-1 Madagascar: From A Midfielder’s Eye — Character, Depth And The Courage to Respond

𝐁𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐲 𝐎𝐤𝐨𝐤𝐮

Football does not always ask how beautifully you begin. Sometimes it asks what you become after you have been wounded.

Madagascar struck first in Uyo.

The stadium tightened. The contest changed. Nigeria were no longer playing the match they had prepared for — they were being asked to recover it.

From a midfielder’s eye, adversity reveals structure: distances can stretch, patience can disappear and confidence can begin to crack.

Nigeria refused to crack.

They regrouped, kept playing and turned a one-goal deficit into a 2–1 victory.

It was not flawless.

It was something more important for the opening night of a qualification campaign:

Madagascar did not come to Uyo intimidated by Nigeria’s reputation.

𝐄𝐡𝐬𝐚𝐧 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐢 struck in the 16th minute, heading home from close range after Madagascar worked a short-corner routine.

Conceding early changes more than the score. Players can become impatient, passes are forced forward and distances grow. That is when structure disappears.

Nigeria resisted that temptation. They kept working the ball, pushing Madagascar backwards and creating chances. They even had the ball in the net before the equalizer, but the effort was disallowed.

𝐅𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Alex Iwobi released debutant George Ilenikhena, who finished to make it 1–1.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡.

Madagascar no longer carried the comfort of a halftime lead or the reassurance that their plan was working. Nigeria entered the dressing room level, with the burden of the chase lifted and belief restored.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐧𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲.

For a midfielder, confidence changes tempo. Players show for the ball more freely, the first touch becomes calmer and the next pass clearer.

Around the hour mark, Éric Chelle withdrew Samuel Chukwueze and Akor Adams. Moses Usor replaced Chukwueze, while Moses Simon replaced Adams.

The coach read the match, not the reputation attached to the players.

Four minutes later, Usor drove forward and produced a superb winning goal.

Both Nigerian goals came from senior international debutants: Ilenikhena started and scored; Usor entered and scored.

That is how depth is built. A strong national team is not eleven untouchable names. It is a squad in which the player entering can carry the responsibility of the player leaving.

And when depth becomes real, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.

No player should arrive at international camp believing his place is guaranteed by reputation, club status or what he did yesterday. If another player takes his opportunity and performs, the shirt must be earned again.

That is not punishment.

Éric Chelle will be criticized. That comes with coaching Nigeria.

Some believe his preferred midfield structure restricts the attacking talent available to him. Others believe Nigeria should play differently because of the quality of players in the squad.

That tactical discussion is legitimate.

But if we examine the coach, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

CAF’s technical profile describes Chelle as an attacking coach who emphasizes high pressing, quick transitions and tactical flexibility, while identifying 4-3-1-2 as his preferred formation.

Every coach has principles and a structure he trusts. The question is whether he can make it work and adapt when the match demands something different.

CAF also noted that under Chelle, Nigeria collected 14 points from 18 in six World Cup qualifiers — four wins and two draws — after collecting only two points before his arrival in that qualifying sequence.

That is measurable improvement.

I am not suggesting that Éric Chelle is perfect or that his tactics should be beyond criticism.

My responsibility as a football analyst is to examine the game, the tactics and the evidence as fairly as possible.

Opinions matter. Tactical observations matter. But when measurable evidence is available, emotion should not replace it.

𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝.

A coach does not have to arrive with the biggest name. Sometimes he builds the name through the work.

Sometimes the résumé grows because the results keep adding pages.

Nigeria finished with roughly 55 percent possession and spent long periods pushing Madagascar towards their own goal.

The territorial control was real.

Nigeria repeatedly reached shooting positions without turning enough of that pressure into goals. The exact scale of that inefficiency belongs in the final warning.

Madagascar defeated Nigeria 2–0 at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Across the continent, teams are better organized, players are developing in professional environments around the world and fear of traditional powers is disappearing.

Tradition has value. Reputation commands attention.

But neither can tackle, create space or score.

Guinea-Bissau opened with a 2–0 victory over Tanzania, while Nigeria collected three points against Madagascar.

Because Tanzania are AFCON 2027 co-hosts and automatically qualified, only the highest-finishing team among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar takes the group’s remaining qualification place.

Nigeria cannot afford another campaign built around late calculations and permutations.

That was Nigeria’s most encouraging quality in Uyo.

The next test is whether the same composure, competition for places and willingness to adapt can travel to Guinea-Bissau.

That is what genuine squad depth should create: opportunity, competition and consequence.

The finishing numbers cannot be ignored.

Nigeria scored two goals from 22 attempts — a shot-conversion rate of just 9.1 percent. Only four attempts were on target — 18.2 percent.

That may be enough to survive one match.

It may not be enough when the margins become smaller.
