Morrison Ogbonna, the Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was found dead in his Calabar hotel room on Thursday. Officers from the NDLEA went to the hotel to collect him for a scheduled duty but found him unresponsive, prompting hotel staff to open the room revealing his lifeless body.

Ogbonna had taken over the Cross River command in August 2025, replacing Rachel Umebuali. Police spokesperson SP Irene Ugbo-Obase confirmed the death, saying “I can confirm that this is true, but what led to his death is something I cannot readily disclose”.

The circumstances surrounding Ogbonna’s death weren’t immediately clear, with details sparse following the discovery by his officers at the hotel.
