Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp has agreed in principle to become the next head coach of Germany’s national football team, marking one of the biggest managerial appointments in international football. Multiple reports indicate that Klopp has accepted the role, although discussions are still ongoing over the details of a long-term contract, the scope of his project with the German Football Association (DFB) and his exit from the Red Bull Group.

The appointment comes after Germany’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign, which ended in a shock Round of 32 elimination on penalties to Paraguay. The early exit prompted the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, leaving the DFB searching for a high-profile coach capable of restoring one of world football’s most successful national teams.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano was among the first to report the breakthrough, using his trademark “Here we go!” announcement to reveal that Klopp had accepted the offer. According to the report, only the final contractual details and arrangements surrounding Klopp’s departure from his executive role as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer remain to be completed before the appointment is officially confirmed.

German media report that senior DFB officials, including president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke, held lengthy meetings with Klopp and his representatives before reaching an agreement in principle. The discussions reportedly focused not only on salary and contract length but also on Klopp’s influence over the long-term restructuring of German football, including youth development, coaching philosophy and technical planning.

Klopp, 59, has been widely regarded as Germany’s preferred national team candidate for several years. After leaving Liverpool in 2024 following a trophy-laden nine-year spell that included the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup, he stepped away from frontline coaching, citing exhaustion before later joining Red Bull in an executive football role.

His expected appointment will require a complete departure from Red Bull. While there had been speculation that Klopp might retain an advisory position, reports now suggest he will sever formal ties with the company to focus entirely on the Germany job. Red Bull had reportedly explored appointing Oliver Glasner as a replacement, but those plans changed after Glasner committed elsewhere.

Klopp now faces the task of rebuilding a German side that has struggled at recent major tournaments despite producing world-class talent. His energetic “gegenpressing” philosophy, strong leadership and track record of developing young players are seen as qualities that could help restore Germany as a global powerhouse ahead of UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Football analysts have largely welcomed the move, describing Klopp as the ideal figure to reconnect the national team with supporters after several disappointing tournaments. Former Germany captain Lothar Matthäus said the DFB is well positioned with experienced leaders and believes Klopp’s appointment could usher in a new era for German football.

Although an official unveiling is still pending, expectations are that Klopp will soon be confirmed as Germany’s new head coach once the remaining administrative issues are resolved. His arrival would represent one of the most significant coaching changes in international football and could reshape Germany’s ambitions for the next World Cup cycle.
