Spain Shock Tournament Favourites France to Reach 2026 FIFA World Cup Final
Spain produced one of the most disciplined performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to defeat pre-tournament favourites France 2-0 in the semi-final at Dallas Stadium, securing a place in Sunday’s final and ending Les Bleus’ dream of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final.
The European champions entered the clash as slight underdogs against a French side packed with attacking stars, including captain Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise. However, Spain’s tactical organisation, relentless pressing and defensive solidity proved too much for Didier Deschamps’ side throughout the encounter.
Spain took control midway through the first half after teenage sensation Lamine Yamal won a penalty. Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted from the spot in the 22nd minute, sending the Spanish supporters into celebration and giving La Roja a deserved lead after an impressive opening spell.
France struggled to establish any rhythm as Spain dominated possession and controlled the midfield. Rodri and Fabián Ruiz dictated the tempo, limiting Mbappé and his fellow forwards to very few clear-cut opportunities while Spain’s defence maintained its compact shape.
The second goal arrived in the 58th minute through an unlikely scorer. Right-back Pedro Porro completed a slick passing move with Dani Olmo before firing past goalkeeper Mike Maignan to double Spain’s advantage and effectively put the contest beyond France.
Spain remained composed during the closing stages, frustrating every French attempt at a comeback. Their organised backline delivered another clean sheet, extending what has become one of the tournament’s defining defensive records. The victory marked Spain’s sixth clean sheet in seven World Cup matches, an unprecedented achievement in a single edition of the competition.
The defeat represents a major disappointment for France, who had entered the tournament among the bookmakers’ favourites and were seeking a third straight appearance in the World Cup final. Despite scoring 16 goals before the semi-final, France failed to break through Spain’s disciplined defence as Mbappé was kept scoreless throughout the match.
After the game, France captain Mbappé admitted his side had been “sloppy” and accepted responsibility for the disappointing display, acknowledging that Spain deserved their victory after controlling key areas of the pitch.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his players for peaking at exactly the right moment in the competition, describing his squad as united, confident and ready for football’s biggest occasion. The victory sends Spain into their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
La Roja will now await the winner of the second semi-final between England and Argentina, while France will compete in the third-place playoff. Spain head into the final carrying remarkable momentum, extending their unbeaten run to 37 matches while combining defensive excellence with clinical finishing.
