Lula Meets Trump at White House for High-Stakes Economy and Security Talks
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrived in Washington on Thursday for a high-level meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, where both leaders are expected to discuss economic cooperation, tariffs, organized crime and regional security issues.
According to U.S. and Brazilian officials, the meeting comes amid efforts by both countries to improve diplomatic ties after months of trade tensions and political disagreements.
Brazilian Finance Minister Dario Durigan said Lula plans to push for stronger economic cooperation while also addressing U.S. tariff measures affecting Brazilian exports. Brazil is seeking to avoid additional trade penalties as Washington continues investigations into alleged unfair trade practices.
One of the key topics expected to dominate the talks is organized crime and drug trafficking. Brazil and the United States recently signed an agreement to improve intelligence sharing and intercept illegal arms and drug shipments across borders.
Reuters reported that Lula is also expected to resist U.S. proposals to classify major Brazilian criminal groups as terrorist organizations, arguing that such a move could negatively affect Brazil’s economy and domestic policies.
The leaders are also expected to discuss Brazil’s vast reserves of rare-earth minerals, which are increasingly important to global technology and energy industries. Brazilian officials have stressed that the country wants foreign partnerships that support industrial development instead of merely exporting raw materials.
Relations between Lula and Trump were initially strained because of ideological differences and disputes surrounding former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a longtime Trump ally currently facing legal troubles in Brazil. However, recent diplomatic engagements between the two leaders have helped ease tensions.
The White House said the discussions would focus on issues important to both nations, including economic growth, security cooperation and regional stability across the Americas.
