Mali Junta Leader Becomes Defence Minister Amid Rising Insecurity

Mali’s transitional leader, Assimi Goïta, has assumed the role of defence minister following a wave of escalating militant attacks across the country, according to reports from state media.

The move comes amid growing security concerns in the West African nation, where armed groups linked to extremist networks have intensified assaults on military positions and rural communities in recent weeks. By taking direct control of the defence portfolio, Goïta is signaling a more centralized and hands-on approach to the country’s security strategy.

State broadcaster ORTM reported that the decision is aimed at strengthening coordination within the armed forces and accelerating responses to insurgent threats. The leadership shift is also expected to streamline command structures as Mali continues to battle instability across several regions.

Security analysts say the move underscores the pressure on the transitional government to demonstrate progress against insurgent groups, particularly in the north and central regions, where violence has persisted despite ongoing military operations.

Since seizing power in successive coups in 2020 and 2021, Goïta has positioned security as a top priority. His administration has increasingly relied on military-led solutions and strengthened partnerships with non-Western allies following the withdrawal of French forces.

However, critics warn that consolidating military authority under one office could raise concerns about oversight and governance, especially as Mali navigates its transition back to civilian rule.

The latest attacks have renewed fears among civilians and humanitarian groups, with displacement rising and access to basic services becoming more limited in conflict-affected areas.
