Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Summons South African Envoy Over Attacks on Citizens
Nigeria has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa following rising concerns over protests and alleged attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government confirmed that the envoy has been invited for a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement, the meeting aims to formally express Nigeria’s “deep concern” over recent developments in South Africa that could strain the long-standing diplomatic relationship between both nations.
The Ministry noted that discussions will focus on ongoing demonstrations by certain groups in South Africa, as well as reported cases involving the harassment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on Nigerian-owned businesses.
Authorities also acknowledged growing frustration among Nigerians at home and abroad over the situation. However, the government urged citizens to remain calm, assuring them that it remains committed to safeguarding the rights, safety, and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.

Nigeria and South Africa have historically maintained strong bilateral ties, making the latest tensions a matter of diplomatic importance.
