The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has commended Nigerian workers for their resilience and contributions to national development, while pledging the party’s commitment to advocating for a living wage.

In a 2026 International Workers’ Day message issued Friday in Abuja, Mark described workers across sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, and industry as the backbone of the nation.

He, however, expressed concern over the economic challenges facing many Nigerians, noting that a significant number of workers continue to endure poor wages, job insecurity, and uncertain futures.

This was made known in a press statement  signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, Technical Adviser on Strategic Communications to the ADC National Chairman.

According to the statement, “The African Democratic Congress recognises that a nation that cannot protect the dignity of its workforce cannot truly claim to be on the path of progress,” he said.

Mark lamented the impact of inflation and unemployment on workers, stating that rising living costs have eroded incomes, while job losses have undermined livelihoods.

The former Senate President assured that the ADC remains committed to policies aimed at improving workers’ welfare, including advocating for a living wage in place of what he described as inadequate minimum wage structures.

He said the party would also push for reforms in the pension system, job creation initiatives, and economic policies that reward productivity while tackling corruption.

Mark further warned that divisions within the labour movement could weaken efforts to advance workers’ rights, urging unity among stakeholders.

“On behalf of the ADC family, I wish all Nigerian workers a peaceful Workers’ Day. Your labour is not in vain. Nigeria will rise again on the strength of your shoulders,” he added.
