Nearly 800 Arrested Following Violent PSG Victory Celebrations Across France
Celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League victory descended into widespread violence across France, with authorities confirming hundreds of arrests and dozens of police officers injured as unrest spread through Paris and several major cities.
What began as jubilant street celebrations quickly escalated into clashes between groups of fans and security forces, particularly around the Champs-Élysées and other central districts in the capital. Police deployed tear gas and crowd-control measures as vehicles were set alight, shops were vandalized, and large crowds refused to disperse into the early hours of the morning.
According to French authorities, more than 700 people were detained nationwide on suspicion of public disorder, looting, and assaulting officers. Dozens of police personnel sustained injuries ranging from minor wounds to serious trauma as they attempted to contain the situation.
Interior Ministry officials said security deployments had been significantly increased ahead of the final, but the scale and speed of the unrest exceeded expectations in several urban hotspots. Emergency services were also stretched as firefighters responded to multiple incidents of arson and property damage.
While PSG’s historic victory was meant to mark a defining moment for French football, the celebrations have instead reignited debate over crowd control, policing strategy, and recurring unrest linked to major sporting events in the country.
Authorities have opened investigations into the organizers of violent gatherings and are reviewing surveillance footage to identify additional suspects.
