A major political realignment may be underway ahead of the 2027 general elections, as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are expected to unveil a new political platform on Monday.

This was disclosed by Buba Galadima, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party, during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement held in Abuja on Saturday.

Galadima revealed that both leaders and their allies had been engaged in final-stage negotiations with key figures of the proposed platform, believed to be the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Both Obi, Kwankwaso and their chieftains were on ground between yesterday and this morning signing the relevant documents with Senator Dickson and the NDC leaders,” he said.

Break from ADC, coalition talks deepen

According to him, the planned announcement will include their formal exit from the African Democratic Congress, amid concerns over internal dynamics within the opposition.

Galadima alleged that previous alliances were undermined by competing presidential ambitions, particularly referencing Atiku Abubakar and his supporters.

“We don’t want a repeat of what happened in the ADC. We discovered late that Atiku and his loyalists lured our leaders there to fulfil only one mission — his presidential ambition,” he said.

Warning of political pushback

The NNPP chieftain also cautioned supporters to prepare for what he described as coordinated backlash following the announcement, including media criticism and social media campaigns targeting the new movement.

He urged supporters, especially those active online, to respond strategically and defend the credibility of the leaders.

Growing opposition momentum

The anticipated unveiling comes amid weeks of speculation over the political future of both Obi and Kwankwaso, particularly following recent legal and structural challenges affecting opposition parties.

Also speaking at the event, businessman Isaac Fayose expressed strong support for the proposed alliance, describing it as a credible alternative capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.

Meanwhile, activist Aisha Yesufu called for unity across ethnic and regional lines, urging Nigerians to prioritise national cohesion over division.

“It is time for us to become a nation that works. When they tell you this is an Igbo, Hausa or Yoruba person, remind them that we are all Nigerians,” she said.

2027 in focus

Political observers say the planned platform could significantly alter the configuration of opposition politics if successfully launched, especially as coalition talks intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

The formal declaration on Monday is expected to provide clarity on the structure, leadership and electoral strategy of the emerging political bloc.
