Shettima Returns To Nigeria After Representing Tinubu At UN General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after leading the country’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.

Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 on the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to represent Nigeria at the annual high level gathering of world leaders.

During his engagements in New York, the Vice President delivered President Tinubu’s National Statement at the General Debate, where Nigeria renewed its demand for reform of the UN Security Council, including permanent representation for Africa.

He also canvassed fairer global financing, stronger international support for climate action and deeper multilateral cooperation to address global development challenges.

At the Third High Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, Shettima conveyed President Tinubu’s call for African countries to move beyond the export of raw minerals by investing in processing, manufacturing and value addition.

The Vice President also represented Nigeria at a high level education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, where he reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to education as a key investment in human capital, productivity and national development.

Shettima expressed Nigeria’s support for the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign, while highlighting the importance of increased investment in education across developing countries.

He also met with Nigerians in the Diaspora, urging them to contribute their expertise, investments and international networks to the country’s development.

Other engagements included meetings with the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission and United Nations Deputy Secretary General Amina J. Mohammed.

According to the Presidency, Shettima’s engagements focused on Nigeria’s positions on development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace and security, as well as President Tinubu’s call for a more representative and equitable global order.

The Vice President returned to Nigeria on Sunday, September 28, following the conclusion of his diplomatic engagements in New York.
