Thai Princess Bajrakitiyabha Dies at 47 After More Than Three Years in Coma
Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has died at the age of 47 after spending more than three years in a coma, the Royal Household Bureau announced.
Known affectionately as “Princess Bha,” she had remained hospitalized since December 2022 after collapsing due to a severe heart-related condition while exercising her dogs. Her health subsequently deteriorated because of multiple complications, including infections, irregular heart rhythms, and blood-clotting disorders.
The princess was widely regarded as one of the most accomplished members of Thailand’s royal family. A trained lawyer with advanced degrees from Cornell University, she served as a prosecutor, diplomat, and advocate for legal reform. She also represented Thailand internationally, including as ambassador to Austria, Slovenia, and Slovakia, and worked closely with the United Nations on justice and prison reform initiatives.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul paid tribute to the princess, describing her as “a pride of Thailand” whose dedication to justice, equality, and public service left a lasting impact on the nation.
Her death is expected to trigger renewed discussion about the future of Thailand’s monarchy and royal succession. As the king’s eldest child and one of the most visible royals, Princess Bajrakitiyabha had long been viewed by many observers as a significant figure in the kingdom’s future.
The Royal Household Bureau said funeral rites would be conducted with the highest royal honours at Bangkok’s Grand Palace, while Thailand enters a period of mourning following the loss of one of its most respected royal figures.
