Trump Faces Setback as House Supports Russia Sanctions Bill
The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to approve new sanctions targeting Russia alongside additional military and financial assistance for Ukraine, marking a significant legislative setback for President Donald Trump’s approach to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe.
Lawmakers backed the package in a vote that reflects growing congressional support for maintaining pressure on Moscow while sustaining Ukraine’s defence capabilities amid the prolonged war.
The measure includes expanded sanctions aimed at Russian energy exports, financial institutions and individuals linked to the country’s war effort, according to congressional sources familiar with the legislation.
At the same time, the bill provides renewed funding for Ukraine, including security assistance and support for reconstruction efforts in areas affected by the conflict.
Supporters of the legislation argued that continued pressure on Russia is necessary to deter further escalation and reinforce international opposition to the invasion of Ukraine.
The vote also underscores divisions between Congress and the White House over foreign policy direction, with some lawmakers pushing for a firmer stance against Moscow than the administration has advocated.
Critics of the measure, however, warned that additional sanctions could further strain global energy markets and complicate diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war.
The legislation now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to face further debate before any final approval and potential presidential consideration.
Analysts say the outcome highlights sustained U.S. political commitment to Ukraine, even as debates intensify over the long-term costs and strategy of the conflict.
