US Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks Resigns Amid Ongoing DHS Leadership Shake-Up
The head of the United States Border Patrol, Michael Banks, has announced his resignation, marking the latest major leadership change within the United States Department of Homeland Security under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Banks confirmed his decision during an interview with Fox News on Thursday, saying it was “just time” to step down after nearly four decades in law enforcement service. His resignation was later confirmed by DHS officials.
The outgoing Border Patrol chief had been a central figure in the administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement strategy since assuming office in January 2025. Before returning to federal service, Banks served as border czar for Texas Governor Greg Abbott, where he became known for supporting strict border control measures.
His tenure coincided with a dramatic drop in illegal border crossings, which the administration credited to tougher enforcement policies and expanded border operations. However, some of those operations also drew criticism from civil rights groups and immigration advocates, particularly over raids in Democratic-led cities and incidents involving the deaths of civilians during enforcement actions.
Banks’ departure comes amid broader changes within DHS and immigration agencies. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons is also preparing to leave office later this month, while other senior immigration officials have either retired or been reassigned in recent months.
Although no official successor has been announced, the resignation is expected to further reshape leadership within America’s immigration enforcement system as the Trump administration continues recalibrating its border security strategy.
