Former Anambra State governor and frontline presidential aspirant under the Action Democratic Party (ADC), Peter Obi, has opened up on his recent closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan, describing it as part of wider consultations aimed at shaping Nigeria’s future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi said the visit, which included notable South-East leaders, focused on finding lasting solutions to the country’s deepening challenges and charting a fresh path for national development.

According to him, discussions with Jonathan were frank, thoughtful, and centred on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria toward unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.

“At a time when our nation continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening social divisions, it has become imperative that leaders across regions come together to reflect, consult, and act in the overall interest of the Nigerian people,” Obi stated.

He stressed that Nigeria’s leadership must be built on competence, character, capacity, and compassion rather than personal ambition or political convenience.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate also argued that governance should go beyond the sharing of scarce resources and instead focus on creating opportunities, boosting productivity, and moving Nigeria from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based one.

Obi described the 2027 general elections as a defining moment for national rebirth, saying the exercise must go beyond politics and address the real needs of ordinary Nigerians.

According to him, issues such as quality education, economic opportunities, youth empowerment, and improved security should dominate national conversations ahead of the polls.

He maintained that the future of the country depends on leaders who are willing to place national interest above personal gain and work together across political and regional divides.
