NIGERIAN MILITARY CONFIRMS FAILED COUP PLOT, OFFICERS TO FACE TRIAL
The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that there was an unsuccessful coup attempt against President Bola Tinubu, with identified officers now set to stand trial. This follows the earlier arrest of sixteen officers in October 2025 over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria stated that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to appropriate superior authority. “The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel,” Uba stated. “The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN.”

The statement noted that those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel. Samaila Uba emphasized that this ensures accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process. He reiterated that the measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order and discipline within the ranks.
Further, Samaila Uba affirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to professionalism and constitutional authority. “The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” the statement concluded. The statement was signed by Major General Samaila Uba and dated 26 January 2026.
