A Federal Capital Territory task force operative has been shot dead in the Wuse 2 district of Abuja following a heated altercation with unidentified security personnel over an attempted vehicle seizure.

The incident occurred on April 24, 2026, along the busy Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, sending shockwaves through the area and causing panic among residents and passersby . Eyewitnesses reported that the deceased operative was part of a task force team attempting to impound a vehicle when a dispute broke out with its occupants, who were reportedly accompanied by armed security operatives .

According to multiple accounts, the confrontation began at a traffic light after the vehicle was stopped. The driver allegedly protested that members of the task force had placed an object under his car, immobilising the tyres and preventing him from moving . When the traffic light turned green and other vehicles drove off, the driver remained stuck, leading to escalating tensions.

A witness recounted the sequence of events, stating, “The officer kept saying, ‘Remove the object you placed under my car. My tyre is stuck.’ But they ignored him. He again told them, ‘Remove the object from my car and let me go.’ But they insisted that he must either provide his papers or pay” .

As the standoff intensified, one of the security operatives allegedly fired a warning shot into the air in an attempt to disperse the task force members. However, witnesses said the task force officials continued the confrontation, declaring that they would not be intimidated.

“The officer then fired a warning shot into the air to scare them, but they continued shouting, saying they were not afraid and that he was lying. The security personnel then stepped back and shot one of them directly in the forehead. He fell down and died instantly,” another eyewitness narrated .

Sources further claimed that the vehicle was part of a convoy carrying security personnel and foreign nationals at the time of the incident, adding a complex dimension to the shooting . Witnesses reported that following the fatal shooting, the assailant and others involved fled the scene immediately.

“The next thing I saw was that all of them started running away. But this young man lost his life for nothing. If they had listened when the officer asked them to remove the object from the car, he would still be alive,” a distraught witness said.

The killing has heightened concerns among residents over the conduct of enforcement operations in the capital and the growing tension between task force officials and security agents. A motorist who spoke on the incident described the task force’s activities as problematic, stating that its members “operate with reckless abandon as if they are above the law”.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to issue an official statement clarifying the circumstances of the shooting or identifying those involved . The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
