A Dutch expedition cruise ship, the MV Hondius, at the centre of a deadly hantavirus outbreak is set to sail to Spain’s Canary Islands for further medical assessment after multiple evacuations and rising global concern.

Health authorities say the vessel, carrying about 150 passengers and crew from over 20 countries, has recorded at least seven suspected cases of hantavirus, including two laboratory-confirmed infections and three deaths.

The outbreak, which began in April during the ship’s voyage across the South Atlantic, has forced strict quarantine measures onboard, with passengers largely confined to their cabins while international health teams monitor the situation.

According to the World Health Organization, the virus is typically transmitted through contact with infected rodents. However, officials are investigating the possibility of rare human-to-human transmission, particularly linked to the Andes strain of the virus.

Several critically ill passengers and crew members have already been medically evacuated to hospitals in Europe and South Africa, while others remain under observation onboard.

The ship was initially denied docking in Cape Verde due to health concerns, prompting authorities to redirect it to the Canary Islands, where Spanish officials are expected to conduct a full epidemiological investigation and manage passenger repatriation.

Experts say the overall risk to the wider public remains low, as hantavirus generally requires close contact for transmission. Still, the confined environment of a cruise ship has raised fears about potential spread and highlighted the challenges of containing infectious diseases at sea.

There is currently no specific cure or vaccine for hantavirus, though early medical intervention can improve survival chances.
