Catholic Church Announces Death of Monsignor Gabriel Osu
The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the death of Very Rev. Msgr. Gabriel Sunsay Osu, a respected priest and pioneer communications director, who passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Archbishop of Lagos, the Church described the development as a painful loss but expressed faith in Christ and hope in the resurrection.
Monsignor Osu was born on September 5, 1954, in Ogbego Quarters, Ubulu-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State. He was ordained a Catholic priest on December 5, 1981, and spent decades serving the Church in various capacities within the Lagos Archdiocese.
Until his death, he was attached to Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Northern Foreshore, Lekki.
During his priestly ministry, Monsignor Osu served in several prominent parishes and institutions, including Holy Cross Cathedral, St. Gregory’s College, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and St. Paul Catholic Church.
He was widely known for his contributions to Church communications and media work, having served for many years as Director of Social Communications for the Archdiocese of Lagos.
Monsignor Osu was also recognised as the pioneer Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat in Lagos, where he played a key role in strengthening the Church’s media and public engagement efforts.
The Archdiocese said funeral arrangements would be announced later and called on the faithful to pray for the repose of his soul and for comfort for all those mourning his passing.
“May God grant him eternal rest and a place of happiness, light and peace among the saints,” the statement added.
