US Lawmakers Move to Permanently Block Chinese Vehicles Over Security Fears

Bipartisan lawmakers in the United States Congress are pushing for tougher restrictions on Chinese automobiles, introducing new legislation aimed at permanently blocking Chinese vehicle manufacturers from entering the American market over national security concerns.

The proposed bill, introduced by Representatives John Moolenaar and Debbie Dingell, seeks to strengthen existing regulations imposed during the administration of former President Joe Biden that effectively barred Chinese automakers from selling passenger vehicles in the United States.

The legislation would go further by banning vehicles designed in China that use advanced connectivity systems or vehicle software, amid fears that such technologies could allow sensitive American data to be collected or monitored by foreign actors.

The move comes just ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned diplomatic talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as tensions continue to grow over trade, technology, and industrial competition between the two global powers.

A similar bipartisan proposal was earlier introduced in the Senate by Senators Bernie Moreno and Elissa Slotkin, reflecting growing consensus in Washington against expanding Chinese influence in the U.S. automotive industry.

Major American auto industry groups, including manufacturers, suppliers, and dealers, have backed the tougher measures, warning that China’s rapid expansion in electric vehicle production poses a direct threat to U.S. manufacturing, jobs, and economic competitiveness.

In response, the Chinese Embassy in Washington criticized the proposed restrictions, accusing the United States of overstretching national security concerns and promoting discriminatory trade practices against Chinese companies.

Despite the political resistance, analysts say interest in Chinese-made electric vehicles continues to grow globally due to their affordability and advanced technology, increasing fears among U.S. automakers of stronger competition in the years ahead.
