WHO, World Bank Warn World Remains Vulnerable to Next Pandemic

The World Health Organization and the World Bank have warned that the world remains dangerously unprepared for the next global pandemic despite the devastating lessons of COVID-19.

In a new report, the WHO said rising global threats including climate change, increased international travel, armed conflicts and the misuse of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are increasing the risk of future outbreaks faster than countries are improving preparedness.

The warning comes amid renewed health concerns following the declaration of Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda as public health emergencies.

According to health officials, the outbreaks have already claimed more than 100 lives, while concerns continue to grow over the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments.

The WHO said many countries still lack adequate funding, surveillance systems, laboratory testing capacity and emergency response mechanisms needed to quickly detect and contain infectious disease outbreaks.

The report further noted that weak health systems, limited international coordination and shortages in medical infrastructure continue to expose major gaps in global health security.

The WHO and World Bank urged governments across the world to urgently invest in stronger healthcare systems, emergency preparedness, rapid-response capabilities and international cooperation to prevent future pandemics from spiraling into global crises.

Health experts also stressed the need for sustained political commitment and long-term financing, warning that delayed action could leave the world exposed to another large-scale health emergency with severe economic and humanitarian consequences.
