The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has dismissed several intelligence analysts linked to a controversial 2023 internal memo that examined potential ties between so-called “Radical Traditionalist Catholic” ideology and violent extremism, according to reports and statements from the employees’ legal representative.

The employees fired reportedly include four intelligence analysts and one supervisory analyst who were involved in producing the intelligence assessment at the FBI’s Richmond, Virginia field office. The bureau has declined to publicly comment on the dismissals.

The memo, issued in January 2023, became the subject of intense political controversy after it was leaked to the public. The document explored possible links between certain fringe traditionalist Catholic movements and racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists. Critics, particularly Republicans in Congress, argued that the report unfairly targeted Catholics and conservatives.

Following public backlash, the FBI withdrew the memo and launched an internal review. Then-Attorney General Merrick Garland described the document as troubling, while former FBI Director Christopher Wray repeatedly denied accusations that the bureau was targeting religious groups.

According to findings from the FBI’s internal investigation, those involved in drafting and approving the memo failed to follow established analytical standards and did not provide sufficient evidence to support the document’s conclusions. Investigators said the report created the appearance that religious beliefs were being associated with extremist activity without adequate justification.

However, a subsequent review by the Justice Department’s inspector general found no evidence of malicious intent or improper motives by the analysts involved, despite identifying shortcomings in analytical procedures and professional judgment.

The firings come amid a broader restructuring effort under FBI Director Kash Patel, who has overseen the removal of a number of bureau employees linked to politically sensitive investigations or controversies from previous administrations.

Attorney David Laufman, representing the dismissed employees, condemned the decision, calling it “manifestly unjust” and arguing that the analysts had served the country with distinction. He maintained that the firings were unsupported by the facts and departed from standard FBI procedures.

The latest dismissals are expected to reignite debate over the FBI’s handling of domestic extremism investigations, religious freedom concerns, and the agency’s efforts to rebuild public trust following years of political scrutiny.
