At least three passengers have been confirmed dead following the derailment of the Warri-Itakpe train service on Monday in Agbor, Delta State.
The incident occurred along the Warri-Itakpe Train Service corridor when four coaches left the tracks, causing a major accident that left several others injured.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the derailment and immediately activated emergency response teams to the scene.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirms a serious train accident at Agbor along the Warri-Itakpe Train Service corridor. Rescue and emergency response operations were immediately activated,” said NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kayode Opeifa.
The Presidency later issued an update confirming the three fatalities and stating that all passengers on board had been accounted for.
“Sadly, three fatalities have been confirmed at this time. Relevant authorities continue to assess the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while support is being provided to affected passengers,” the presidency statement read.
A total of 35 injured passengers are currently receiving medical attention across three hospitals in the area, according to the Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Mr. Monday Odigwe.
He disclosed that 13 victims are being treated at Central Hospital, Agbor, 12 at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu, and 10 at General Hospital, Owa-Alero.
Mr. Odigwe also stated that officials have received assurances that efforts would be made to lift the derailed train on Tuesday.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed sadness over the tragic incident, describing it as heartbreaking and unfortunate.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
Governor Oborevwori said he had directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, along with the Chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas, to move to the scene and coordinate rescue efforts.
Dr. Opeifa urged members of the public to remain calm and rely only on official communication channels from the NRC for verified information regarding the accident.
The Warri-Itakpe rail corridor has experienced previous incidents, including a derailment in November 2025 which the NRC attributed to track vandalism.
A full investigation into the cause of Monday’s derailment is expected to be launched as recovery operations continue at the scene.
