Taiwan’s government has said that only U.S. President Donald Trump can determine whether and when a proposed phone conversation with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te will take place, underscoring the sensitivity surrounding relations between Taipei, Washington, and Beijing.

The comments came after reports suggested that discussions had taken place regarding a possible call between Trump and Lai. Taiwanese officials declined to speculate on the timing of any such conversation, emphasizing that the decision rests with the U.S. president.

A phone call between the leaders would be closely watched internationally because of the delicate diplomatic status of Taiwan. While the United States maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan, Washington is also committed to its long-standing “One China” policy, under which it formally recognizes Beijing rather than Taipei.

Taiwan’s government said it maintains regular communication with the United States through established diplomatic and security channels and remains committed to strengthening ties with its most important international partner. Officials stressed that Taiwan values bipartisan support in Washington and continues to cooperate closely with the United States on security, trade, and regional stability.

Any direct communication between Trump and Lai would likely draw strong attention from China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes official interactions between Taiwanese leaders and foreign governments. Beijing has repeatedly warned against actions it believes could lend legitimacy to Taiwan’s separate political status.

The issue comes amid ongoing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and increasing geopolitical competition between the United States and China. Analysts say even symbolic gestures involving Taiwan can have significant diplomatic implications and are often scrutinized by all parties involved.

Trump’s administration has maintained strong unofficial ties with Taiwan, including continued security cooperation and support for the island’s self-defense capabilities. At the same time, Washington has sought to manage its broader relationship with China on issues ranging from trade and technology to regional security.

For now, Taiwanese officials say there is no confirmed timetable for a presidential phone call, adding that any announcement would come through official channels if and when arrangements are finalized.
