Gaza Peace Effort Gains Momentum, But Iran War Threatens Diplomatic Progress

U.S. President Donald Trump says his administration has made significant progress toward ending the war in Gaza, even as the widening conflict with Iran continues to dominate Washington’s foreign policy agenda and complicate efforts to stabilize the Middle East.

Speaking during a Cabinet meeting and in subsequent public remarks, Trump described ongoing negotiations as a “major breakthrough,” arguing that his administration’s proposed roadmap for Gaza remains on track despite the continuing U.S.-Iran conflict. However, officials familiar with the talks caution that major obstacles remain before any comprehensive agreement can be implemented.

Trump pointed to what he described as an agreement in principle for the phased disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups, calling it an important step toward ending nearly three years of conflict in Gaza.

According to the U.S. proposal, weapons held by Hamas and other factions would be placed under the supervision of a new National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) as part of a broader political transition. The plan also envisions a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces, expanded humanitarian aid and the eventual establishment of a new Palestinian governing structure supported by an international stabilization mission.

Trump credited regional mediators; including Egypt, Qatar and Turkey with helping move negotiations forward, saying their diplomatic engagement had been critical to recent progress.

Despite the optimistic tone from Washington, significant disagreements continue between Israel and Hamas.

Israeli officials have not formally endorsed the U.S.-backed roadmap and insist that Hamas must fully surrender its weapons before any lasting ceasefire or military withdrawal can occur. Members of Israel’s governing coalition have also expressed strong opposition to concessions they believe could leave Hamas with any future political or military role.

Hamas, meanwhile, says it is willing to discuss placing weapons under Palestinian oversight but rejects unconditional disarmament. The group insists that Israel must first halt military operations, withdraw troops from Gaza and allow a significant increase in humanitarian assistance before any final agreement on weapons can take effect.

Even as negotiations over Gaza continue, the broader regional crisis involving Iran has become an increasingly significant challenge.

The ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict has diverted diplomatic attention and military resources, making it more difficult to sustain momentum in Gaza negotiations. Senior U.S. officials acknowledge that developments in the Iran conflict are closely influencing discussions involving Israel, Arab mediators and Palestinian representatives.

Recent fighting involving Iran; including attacks on commercial shipping, regional military installations and U.S. personnel, has heightened tensions across the Middle East and increased concerns that the conflict could further delay implementation of any Gaza agreement.

While diplomatic negotiations continue, conditions inside Gaza remain dire.

Israeli airstrikes and military operations have continued in parts of the territory despite reports of progress in negotiations. Humanitarian organizations warn that shortages of food, medicine, fuel and clean water persist, with hundreds of thousands of civilians continuing to depend on emergency aid.

Aid agencies have urged all parties to ensure humanitarian access regardless of the outcome of political negotiations, warning that further delays could worsen an already severe humanitarian crisis.

Regional governments have cautiously welcomed continued negotiations while emphasizing that any agreement must be durable and enforceable.

Analysts note that previous ceasefire agreements have repeatedly collapsed because of disagreements over implementation, verification mechanisms and the sequencing of military withdrawals and disarmament. As a result, many observers remain cautious despite Trump’s optimistic assessment.

Negotiators are expected to continue discussions in the coming days as mediators work to bridge differences between Israel and Hamas.

For Trump, progress in Gaza represents an opportunity to demonstrate diplomatic success at a time when the war with Iran continues to consume U.S. military and political attention. Whether the proposed roadmap ultimately succeeds will depend on resolving longstanding disagreements over disarmament, Israeli security guarantees, governance in Gaza and the sequencing of each phase of the agreement.
