Canada Secures Historic First World Cup Win With Dominant 6-0 Rout Over Qatar
Jonathan David scored a hat trick as Canada earned its first-ever men’s World Cup victory with a resounding 6-0 win over Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver.
The sellout crowd of over 52,000 witnessed a historic performance that puts the co-hosts on the verge of the knockout round. Canada now has a greater than 99 percent chance of advancing to the round of 32.

Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing a rebound after David’s volley was saved by Qatari goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada.
David doubled the lead in the 29th minute with a powerful volley. The rout continued when Homam Ahmed received a red card for a challenge on Tajon Buchanan in the 34th minute, reducing Qatar to 10 men. David then bundled home his second goal in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-0.
The match took a frightening turn early in the second half when Canada midfielder Ismael Koné suffered an apparent broken leg after a tackle from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. Madibo was shown a red card, leaving Qatar with only nine players. The injury cast a shadow over the celebration as Koné was stretchered off in visible distress.
Nathan Saliba, who came on for the injured Koné, scored a beautiful free kick in the 64th minute and held up Koné’s jersey in tribute.
Jacob Shaffelburg added a fifth goal in the 75th minute, and David completed his hat trick in stoppage time for the sixth and final goal. Canada outshot Qatar 30-2, and goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau did not face a single shot on target.
“It was an unbelievable feeling,” said David, who now has 42 goals for Canada, extending his all-time men’s record. Head coach Jesse Marsch praised his team’s performance but expressed concern for Koné’s injury.
Canada will face Switzerland in its final group match on June 24, where a draw would secure top spot in Group B.
