South Africa scored their first FIFA World Cup goal in 16 years on Thursday as Bafana Bafana fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in a crucial Group A encounter.

The result ended a long wait for a World Cup goal for South Africa, whose last strike on football’s biggest stage came during the 2010 tournament they hosted. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena etched his name into the history books by converting a late penalty to rescue a valuable point for Hugo Broos’ side.

South Africa endured a difficult start and fell behind in the sixth minute when Czech midfielder Michal Sadilek capitalized on a defensive lapse to put his side ahead. The Czechs looked comfortable for long periods and appeared on course for victory as they protected their lead.

However, Bafana Bafana gradually grew into the contest, enjoying more possession and pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Their persistence paid off in the 83rd minute when a handball inside the Czech penalty area led to a spot-kick. Mokoena calmly converted from the penalty spot, sparking celebrations among South African players and supporters.

The match carried significant importance for both teams after opening-round defeats. South Africa had lost 2-0 to Mexico, while the Czech Republic suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Korea, leaving both nations desperate for points to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.

The draw means both teams now sit on one point in Group A and face must-win matches in their final group fixtures. South Africa will take on South Korea, while the Czech Republic face hosts Mexico.
