Spain secured their first victory of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in emphatic fashion on Sunday, defeating Saudi Arabia 4-0 in a dominant Group H performance that reignited their campaign after a disappointing opening draw against Cape Verde.

European champions Spain wasted little time asserting their authority, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal opening the scoring in the 10th minute. The goal marked Yamal’s first-ever World Cup strike and set the tone for a one-sided contest at Atlanta Stadium.

Spain doubled their advantage through Mikel Oyarzabal before the Real Sociedad forward struck again just minutes later, giving Luis de la Fuente’s side a commanding 3-0 lead before halftime. Oyarzabal’s clinical display helped silence any doubts that emerged following Spain’s goalless draw in their tournament opener.

The fourth goal arrived early in the second half when Saudi defender Hassan Al-Tambakti inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure from the Spanish attack, effectively ending any hopes of a Saudi comeback.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team’s more aggressive and direct approach, saying the tactical adjustments helped unlock a Saudi side that struggled to cope with Spain’s movement and attacking quality.

The victory moves Spain to four points in Group H and strengthens their chances of progressing to the knockout stage. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, remain on one point and will need a positive result in their final group match to keep their qualification hopes alive.

For Yamal, the match was particularly memorable. The 18-year-old Barcelona star became one of the youngest goalscorers in World Cup history and delivered a standout performance that underlined why he is regarded as one of football’s brightest young talents.
