India is in preliminary discussions with the United Arab Emirates over the potential sale of its flagship BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, according to multiple sources familiar with the negotiations. The talks also reportedly include India’s advanced Akashteer air defense system, as Abu Dhabi seeks to strengthen its military capabilities amid heightened security concerns in the Middle East. The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, is regarded as one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles. It can be launched from land, sea, and air platforms and is considered one of India’s most successful defense export products.

Sources said the UAE’s interest comes as Gulf nations reassess their defense needs following recent regional conflicts and threats to strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz. Strengthening missile and air defense capabilities has become a priority for several countries in the region.

Before any BrahMos deal can be finalized, India would need approval from Russia because the missile is produced through a joint Indo-Russian venture. However, sources indicated that Russian approval is not expected to be a major obstacle given Moscow’s close relations with Abu Dhabi.

The potential agreement would mark another significant milestone in India’s growing defense export ambitions. New Delhi has already exported BrahMos missiles to the Philippines and recently concluded agreements with Vietnam, while similar deals with other countries are under discussion.

Defense analysts say a successful UAE deal would further establish India as a major supplier of advanced military technology and strengthen strategic ties between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi. The discussions also reflect the UAE’s efforts to diversify its defense procurement beyond traditional Western suppliers.

If concluded, the deal would represent one of the most significant defense agreements between India and the UAE and could further elevate India’s position in the global arms export market.
