Devastating floods have swept through Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, displacing numerous residents and destroying properties as the rainy season peaks.

The disaster aligns with the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which identified communities in the Niger Delta as being at particularly high risk.

The surging waters have turned many neighborhoods into virtual rivers, forcing families to flee their homes in search of higher ground.

Coastal and riverine areas in Akwa Ibom are especially vulnerable, compounding challenges such as pollution and ocean encroachment.

The flooding is threatening to peak between July and September, leaving residents to grapple with rising water levels and destroyed homes.

Local community leaders are calling for immediate action, stressing that preparation is key to saving lives. We must turn awareness into protection, a statement from the Safe Space Development Foundation emphasized, highlighting the urgent need for resilience.

As the situation worsens, many homeless residents remain in temporary shelters, facing an uncertain future.
