Lassa Fever Cases Climb as NCDC Records 39 New Infections, Seven Deaths in Two Weeks

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a fresh surge in Lassa fever infections, confirming 39 new cases and seven deaths within a two-week period, raising concerns over the continued spread of the viral disease.

According to the NCDC, the latest cases were recorded between July 7 and July 20 across six states, with Ondo, Edo and Bauchi accounting for the highest number of new infections.

The agency said the case fatality rate for the reporting period stood at 17.9 per cent, while the cumulative number of confirmed Lassa fever cases nationwide has now surpassed 800 this year.

In response to the increase, the NCDC urged state governments to intensify rodent control measures, strengthen infection prevention and control practices in healthcare facilities, and promote early diagnosis and treatment.

The public health agency also advised Nigerians to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, headache or unexplained bleeding.

It further stressed that maintaining good hygiene, storing food properly, and limiting contact with rodents remain critical measures for preventing the spread of Lassa fever.
