EU Says It Will Not Send Observers to Monitor Nigeria Election

The European Union will reportedly not deploy a full election observation mission for Nigeria’s 2027 general election, a move that would break a more than two-decade pattern of EU missions monitoring elections in Africa’s most populous country.

The decision comes after the bloc warned last year that Nigeria was running out of time to implement reforms needed to strengthen confidence in the 2027 vote.

The EU reportedly cited worsening insecurity and hostile treatment following its critical assessment of Nigeria’s 2023 elections as reasons for the withdrawal.

The bloc had previously been a regular observer of Nigerian elections, with its presence seen as a key marker of international confidence in the electoral process.

Despite this decision, the EU continues to engage with Nigeria on electoral matters.

The Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS recently facilitated a three-day Early Warning–Early Response workshop in Ekiti State ahead of the June 20, 2026 off-cycle elections, equipping local observers with skills to identify electoral risk indicators.

This suggests the bloc is shifting focus toward supporting local monitoring capacity rather than deploying its own observers.
