FG Rules Out Electricity Tariff Hike, Says Focus Is On Improving Power Supply

The Federal Government has ruled out any immediate increase in electricity tariffs, dismissing reports that it is planning an upward review of charges paid by electricity consumers.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the government was focused on improving electricity supply and addressing structural challenges across the power sector rather than increasing tariffs.

Tegbe made this known on Monday in Abuja at a media parley marking his first 100 days in office, covering the period from June 8 to September 16, 2026.

The minister said he received several calls over the weekend following reports that the Federal Government was preparing to increase electricity tariffs, describing the reports as inaccurate.

He also alleged that the reports were politically motivated ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the administration’s priority was to improve the reliability of electricity supply across the country.

According to Tegbe, the government is pursuing renewable energy solutions while undertaking a comprehensive audit of power infrastructure nationwide to identify critical gaps and determine areas requiring urgent intervention.

He said the challenges confronting Nigeria’s electricity sector cut across the entire value chain, from generation and transmission to distribution, stressing that increasing generation capacity alone would not resolve the problems.

“The power sector has constraints across the entire value chain,” the minister said, noting that the government was working to identify and address the interconnected challenges affecting the sector.

Tegbe’s comments come amid continuing concerns over the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity market and the government’s role in supporting the sector.

The minister said the administration would continue to pursue measures aimed at strengthening the power sector and improving service delivery to consumers.

The Federal Government’s position also comes against the backdrop of ongoing discussions over electricity subsidies and proposed reforms to make the power market more financially sustainable.

For now, Tegbe said there was no plan for an upward review of electricity tariffs, while the government continues with its infrastructure assessment and efforts to improve power supply.
