Pope Leo XIV has undergone a successful operation to remove a nodule from his lung at a hospital in Rome, the Vatican has announced.

The Vatican confirmed on Tuesday that the surgery on the 71-year-old pontiff was successfully completed, although further details about his condition were not immediately provided.

According to Channels Television, the operation marks the first time Pope Leo XIV has been hospitalised since becoming head of the Catholic Church on May 8, 2025.

Vatican officials who saw the Pope on Monday said he appeared relaxed about his planned hospital stay.

The development comes as the pontiff continues his leadership of the Catholic Church, which has millions of followers across the world.

The Vatican is expected to provide further updates on his recovery and medical condition.
