Albanians Rally Against Proposed Resort Backed by Trump Son-in-Law’s Firm
Several thousand people marched through Albania’s capital, Tirana, to protest a proposed luxury resort development linked to a company associated with Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The demonstrators voiced concerns over plans to develop a high-end tourism complex on Sazan Island, a largely undeveloped area located off Albania’s Adriatic coast. Environmental groups, activists and opposition supporters argue that the project could damage a fragile ecosystem and threaten one of the country’s most significant natural habitats.
Protesters carrying banners and Albanian flags gathered in central Tirana, calling on the government to abandon the project and protect the island from large-scale commercial development. Organizers said the demonstration reflected growing public concern about transparency in the approval process and the long-term environmental impact of the proposed investment.
The project is linked to investment firm Affinity Partners, founded by Jared Kushner. The company has expressed interest in transforming the island into a luxury tourism destination featuring hotels, villas and recreational facilities. Supporters of the proposal argue that it could attract foreign investment, create jobs and boost Albania’s tourism industry.
However, environmental advocates contend that Sazan Island’s unique biodiversity and historical significance make it unsuitable for major construction projects. Critics have also questioned whether sufficient environmental assessments have been conducted before moving forward with development plans.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended efforts to attract international investors, saying tourism projects can contribute to economic growth while preserving natural resources if properly managed. Government officials have maintained that any development would be subject to environmental regulations and oversight.
The protest marks the latest challenge facing the proposed resort, which has become one of Albania’s most debated development projects. Environmental groups have vowed to continue campaigning against the plan, while investors and government officials insist the project could bring substantial economic benefits to the country.
The controversy highlights the broader tension between economic development and environmental conservation as Albania seeks to expand its tourism sector while protecting its natural heritage.
