A tragic shooting at Endeavour Health Swedish Hospital in Chicago has left one police officer dead and another fighting for his life after a suspect in custody opened fire inside the facility.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on Saturday morning when officers transported a suspect to the hospital for medical observation. While under police supervision in the emergency department, the suspect reportedly produced a firearm and shot both officers.

Police confirmed that one officer later died from his injuries, while a second officer remains in critical condition. The suspect fled the hospital immediately after the shooting, triggering a lockdown of the facility, but was later apprehended by law enforcement.

Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved, pending notification of families. The motive remains unclear, and investigators are now focused on how the suspect was able to access a weapon despite reportedly being screened upon arrival at the hospital.

City leaders described the incident as a devastating loss, with tributes pouring in for the fallen officer. Authorities say a full investigation is underway as the injured officer continues to receive treatment.
