A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo has sentenced a senior army officer to death after finding him guilty of the murder of United Nations experts who were investigating violence in the country’s Kasai region.

The officer, identified as a colonel in the Congolese armed forces, was convicted alongside several others in connection with the killings of two UN-appointed investigators who had been probing human rights abuses and militia activity in the region.

According to court proceedings reported by multiple international outlets, the victims were part of a UN mission tasked with documenting atrocities linked to armed conflict in central Congo. Their deaths in 2017 drew global condemnation and triggered calls for accountability from the United Nations and human rights organizations.

Prosecutors argued that the convicted officer played a central role in orchestrating or facilitating the killings, which were described as an attempt to obstruct international investigations into abuses in the region.

The court ruled that the evidence presented, including witness testimony and military intelligence reports, was sufficient to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The death sentence was handed down under Congo’s military justice system.

Human rights groups have long criticized the handling of the case, calling for transparent investigations and warning about broader impunity within armed structures in the country.

The Congolese government has not yet commented on whether the sentence will be carried out or if the convicted officer will have access to appeal procedures.

The case remains one of the most high-profile prosecutions involving attacks on UN personnel in the Democratic Republic of Congo in recent years.
