Kenya Protest Against US Ebola Centre Ends in Bloodshed
A protest against a controversial United States-backed Ebola quarantine facility in central Kenya turned deadly on Tuesday after a demonstrator was reportedly shot and killed during clashes with police in the town of Nanyuki. Witnesses said the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head as security forces moved to disperse hundreds of protesters opposing the project.
The demonstration was directed at a proposed 50-bed quarantine centre being constructed at the Laikipia Air Base. The facility is intended to house American citizens exposed to Ebola during the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Kenyan authorities and US officials have described the project as a public health preparedness measure, but many residents have rejected the plan, arguing that Kenya should not bear the risks associated with managing Ebola-exposed individuals from abroad.
According to witnesses and protest organisers, police used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse crowds gathered near the proposed site. Journalists at the scene reported seeing the body of a man with a severe head wound in a police vehicle, although authorities have not officially confirmed the circumstances of the shooting. Human rights groups also alleged that officers arrested several protesters and targeted journalists covering the demonstration.
The project has already become the subject of legal and political controversy. Kenyan courts have issued orders temporarily halting construction and demanding greater transparency regarding agreements between Nairobi and Washington. Critics accuse the government of moving ahead with the project despite ongoing legal challenges and public opposition.
President William Ruto has defended the initiative, describing it as a responsible humanitarian response and part of Kenya’s longstanding partnership with the United States. However, opponents argue that the country lacks adequate resources to safely manage a quarantine facility for individuals exposed to the deadly virus.
The latest shooting follows earlier protests over the same project, during which multiple fatalities were reported. Public anger remains high as residents demand the cancellation of the facility and greater government accountability.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the fatal shooting, and investigations into the incident are expected to continue.
